Mình đi cái Information Session này từ hồi cuối tháng 8, nhưng mà bây giờ mới có thời gian post lên đây.. hy vọng giúp bạn nào định apply Columbia năm nay.
Buổi hội thảo này tổ chức ở Singapore, có khoảng 120 người tham dự (trong đó khoảng 40 người là nữ, và khoảng 30 người đã từng đến visit Columbia campus) @-) <-- just a taste of how competitive the applicant pool is.
Người trình bày là cô Katie Lynch, Associate Director of Admission, rất là dễ thương và vui tính.
Theo cô Katie thì.. "MBA admission is all about finding the right fit. And a great business school prepares you for your career, not your first job or that summer internship".
Sau đây là những điểm mạnh của Columbia Business School:
1. Columbia faculties are always involved in solving real world business problems. (Mình có thể dùng lý do này để trả lời "Why Columbia", vì Columbia lúc nào cũng nhấn mạnh "real-world experience", e.g. Columbia's Master Class program - một trong những câu hỏi essay).
2. Core curriculum will equip you with the solid foundation and management skills. The electives in your second year allow flexibility to design your MBA program according to your need. You also have the flexibility to focus on one area or not at all.
3. Clusterred system: students are assigned into a diversed group, who eventually become good friends who always go for competitions or Thursday beers together.
4. Community: student clubs is a big part of the Columbia experience. It's a great way to leverage your career research. There is a Gourmet club as well =p~.
5. Global business opportunities: study tours are conducted by students to go to different parts of the world to explore the business aspects <-- good for those who consider working abroad after MBA. (Mình thấy cái này nhiều trường khác cũng có. Có vẻ như là must-have for business schools nowadays. But it's a great excuse to travel the world. :">).
6. Huge alumni network (30.000 alumni). And they are very accessible.
7. Columbia is a good brand globally.
8. Great speakers visit campus all year round. CEOs always come to Columbia because they live in New York. :D
9. Career placement report is available online.
Một bạn hỏi: "Columbia is known as one of the best Finance program in the country. If I am not into Finance, what is there at Columbia for me?". Cô Katie đùa rằng "Sorry, we have nothing for you!" :D. Nhưng sau đó cô í giải thích rằng Columbia cũng rất mạnh về General Management, và New York location sẽ giúp bạn có cơ hội được tiếp cận nhiều ngành nghế khác nhau (via speakers to campus, or internship). Nhưng mà trong số khoảng 10 alumni đến dự hôm ấy thì chỉ có 1 bác làm Gen Mgt in Manufacturing, 1 bác làm Consulting, còn lại tất cả đều làm trong investment banks hoặc hedge funds. Columbia is really a finance school :-B.

1. Admission is rolling. But if you apply before 6 Jan 2010 then you are automatically considerred for Merits scholarships. Merits scholarships are based on academic, leadership, awards.
2. No-cosigner loan is also not available this year.
3. Essay 1 is the most important. Short-term carreer goal is important and needs to be specific. Long-term goal can be a bit more broad.
4. Blind alumni interview. And it's like a behavioral interview by HR. Một bạn hỏi rằng "How do you control the standard and ensure fairness for alumni interview?" thì cô í trả lời rằng "You can't." :-B. Nhưng mà nếu bạn nào cảm thấy interview unfair thì có thể request adcom to re-interview you on the phone. No campus interview.
Mình không có note tại phần discuss với alumni nên bây giờ quên hết rồi :(. Mình nghĩ nếu bạn nào muốn thành top corporate executive the Columbia là một perfect choice. Columbia alumni are really professionally successful and down-to-earth people.
