20th Annual Asia Business Conference: “Asia: Leading Global Recovery?”
February 5-6, 2010
Register at http://www.rossabc.com
ASEAN Panel: “Business in Southeast Asia: Diversity and Development”
The ten member nations of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) have a combined population of nearly 600 million people and a total GDP of US $1.5 trillion (larger than India's). On January 1, 2010, the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area came into being as the world's largest FTA by population, and including some of its fastest-growing emerging market economies. This panel will highlight the diversity of doing business in three major countries of the region: Vietnam (88 million), a rapidly-growing socialist-economy-in-transition which also suffers from volatility and currency instability; Indonesia (250 million), the world's largest Muslim country and third-largest democracy which maintained respectable domestic-market-based GDP growth during the recent global financial crisis; and Thailand (65 million), an established middle-income manufacturing and agribusiness exporter which has suffered recently from political instability. Our three American panelists will speak from the varying perspectives of a high-tech multinational, an expert on Islamic marketing strategy, and a successful entrepreneur and consultant in a Buddhist country.
Panelists:
Jeffery Prunty. Director of Finance and Administration, Intel Corporation (Vietnam). Presentation Title: "Vietnam - Investments in Technology Pave a Path for Greater Prosperity"
James B. Hoesterey. Walter H. Shorenstein Postdoctoral Fellow, Stanford University Asia-Pacific Research Center. Presentation Title: "Religious Branding: Islam and Marketing in Indonesia"
Michael J. Dunne. President, Dunne & Company. Presentation Title: "Getting Started in Asia: A Road Less Traveled"
Moderator:
Linda Lim, Professor of Strategy, Ross School of Business
2.45 – 4.15 pm
February 6, 2010 (Saturday)
R1220, Ross School of Business
The Asia Business Conference will also feature speakers, who will talk about ASEAN and their experiences in Southeast Asia at other panels:
Finance Panel: John D. Ciorciari. Assistant Professor, University of Michigan Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy
Energy and Environment Panel: Manish Mehta. Executive Director of Industry Forums, National Center for Manufacturing Sciences.
Technology Panel: Ali Zamiri. Regional Director of Business Development, Qualcomm, Inc
