Murray State University
INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS
GLOBAL STUDIES SCHOLARSHIP
Eligibility: Murray State University Global Scholarships are awarded annually on a competitive basis to applicants who are citizens or permanent residents of countries outside the United States. Applicants must first apply and be admitted to an undergraduate or graduate program at Murray State University and submit evidence of the ability to pay the expenses that remain after the scholarship is awarded. Students who have already begun studies at Murray State University are not eligible. The Global Scholarship may not be used in conjunction with a graduate assistantship or other financial support from Murray State University.
Number of scholarships offered per year: 5
Amount of offer: The Murray State University Global Scholarship provides a waiver of the non-resident portion of Murray State University tuition. The scholarship is renewable each semester (up to eight semesters for undergraduate study or up to four semesters for graduate study) on the condition that recipients maintain a grade point average of at least 2.5 in undergraduate degree programs or 3.2 in graduate degree programs at Murray State University. The scholarship may be used during summer sessions at Murray State University. Recipients will be eligible to seek on-campus employment of up to 20 hours per week while classes are in session and full-time during academic breaks and vacations. Please note, however, that (a) receipt of the scholarship does not ensure the availability of on-campus employment; (b) recipients of the scholarship will be expected to contribute to and participate in intercultural programs on campus on request.
INTERNATIONAL ESL SCHOLARSHIPS
Eligibility: For international students who take the ESL program at Murray State University for at least one term prior to their degree program study. Recipients should maintain their academic standing least “average.” Students who have already met the English proficiency requirements but prefer to take the ESL Level 6/University Preparation for at least one term are also eligible.
Number of Scholarships: 50 offered per year.
Available for: both graduates and undergraduates from any country.
Amount:
Undergraduate: total of $8,000 ($1,000/ per semester for a maximum of 8 semesters of fulltime enrollment). Those students able to finish their degrees in fewer than 8 semesters will be able to apply the remainder of the scholarship to the last semester.
Graduate: Total of $4,000 ($1,000/ semester for a maximum of 4 semesters of fulltime enrollment). Those students able to finish their degrees in fewer than 4 semesters will be able to apply the remainder of the scholarship money to the last semester.
GRADUATE STUDENT COUNTRY/REGION SCHOLARSHIP
Eligibility: International graduate students from the following countries: Korea, Japan, Taiwan, China, Thailand, Indonesia, Turkey, Cyprus, Morocco, Venezuela, Nepal, and India; and regions southern Africa, Central America and the Caribbean, and Eastern Europe and former Soviet republics. Recipients should maintain their academic standing at least a B average.
Number of scholarships offered: unlimited
Available for: Graduate students from the 10 specified countries from the time of initial enrollment.
Amount: Tuition fee deduction of one-third (1/3) from the non-resident tuition fee. This scholarship is offered every semester of full time graduate enrollment up to the maximum of 4 semesters or 2 years. For academic year of 2006-2007, the amount of scholarship offered is $5,092/year (at the current nonresident tuition rate of $15,430/year).
INTERNATIONAL UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP
Eligibility: The Murray State University IIS Undergraduate Scholarships are awarded on competitive basis to applicants who are citizens or permanent residents of countries other than the United States. Applicants must first apply and be admitted to the undergraduate program at Murray State University, submitting evidence of the ability to pay the approximate $22,000 per academic year that remains if the scholarship is awarded. (Please see the “Estimate of Expenses” statement included in the Murray State University application package). Students who have already begun study at Murray State University are not eligible. The IIS Undergraduate Scholarship may not be used in conjunction with other financial support from Murray State University’s Institute for International Studies.
Provisions & responsibilities: The Murray State University IIS Undergraduate Scholarship provides a waiver of 20% of Murray State University tuition. The scholarship is renewable each semester (up to eight semesters for undergraduate study) on the condition that recipients maintain a grade point average of at least 3.0 in their undergraduate studies. Recipients not maintaining the required GPA will lose the award for the number of semesters they are not at or above the required 3.0 GPA. The scholarship may also be used during summer sessions at Murray State University. Recipients will be eligible to seek on-campus employment of up to 20 hours per week while classes are in session and full-time during academic breaks and vacations. Please note, however, that (a) receipt of the scholarship does not ensure the availability of on-campus employment; (b) recipients of the scholarship will be expected to contribute to and participate in intercultural programs on campus on request. (Recipients will be required to volunteer 20 hours per semester)
Application procedures: Applicants must provide the following information, in English, in the sequence outlined below:
1) Applicant Information Page (see attached form);
2) A short one page essay describing your extracurricular activities and how you plan to use your time at Murray State to increase intercultural understanding both of yourself and those around you.
3) One letter of reference must be written by a teacher who has taught the applicant in secondary or post-secondary classes. If necessary, the letter of reference may be written in a language other than English.
4) Letter of acceptance from Murray State University Office of Admissions to an undergraduate degree study program.
Application deadline: Complete application packages, following the procedures outlined above, must be submitted no later than July 1, 2006 for the fall 2006 semester and October 1, 2006 for the January 2007 semester to:
