Could anyone explain this question for me please?

According to a study by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, companies in the United States are providing job training and general education for nearly eight million people, about equivalent to the enrollment of the nation’s four-year colleges and universities.
(A) equivalent to the enrollment of
(B) the equivalent of those enrolled in
(C) equal to those who are enrolled in
(D) as many as the enrollment of
(E) as many as are enrolled in

BTW, is the constaruction "PREPOSITION+NOUN+PARTICIPLE" always wrong on GMAT land? I have found only 1 example so far :(

The answer is E. The testing point are illogicality, parallelism and idiom. Here is my explanation:

- Look at the original sentence, I can realise the reduced form: "According to ..... nearly eight million people, (which are) about...." --> So the compared subject here is "eight million people".

- To compare in quantity, use the idiom "as many as"

- The compared subject is implicit: eight million people, about as many as (eight million people) are enrolled in

Hối trước, mình có từng bị sử dụng nhầm "equipvalent" hay "equal". Sau đã note lại "equipvalent modify nouns refering uncountable nouns".

Vì vậy trong câu hỏi của Trang, mình đã loại hết A,B,C còn D và E. D thì loại vì nó không parallel: as many (..eight million people..) với enrollment...

Vì vậy, E là đáp án

Tiện thể lưu ý luôn về enrolement, không phải chỉ có oxford mà từ điển nào cũng có giải thích này.

enrolement , enrolements

An enrolement is the number of people who are enrolled at an institution or on a course
By 1922 the public schools had an enrolement of nearly 16,000 students.
N-COUNT: usu sing (AM) enrollment
