Berkeley Alumni Club of Vietnam get together this Sunday - you're welcome to join

A group of Berkeley alumni will have an informal gathering, just coffee and bowling, but it would be a great chance for any prospective Vietnamese students to meet with alumni from Berkeley as well as other US schools and make connections. Hope it would be interesting and useful for both the prospective students and for the alumni club.

Hi thquangvn (as i dont know your name), posted a pix so u can see that i'm not a brother :) Full name Trần Đăng Thiên Hương, i'm in FMCG Unilever marketing for 4 yrs now. Currently posted in Manila for a year so we're in the same boat, i'm also jealous for not being able to join in this gathering too (just kidding of course!), but i think the info would be very helpful for many others in VN. What about you?

Hi anh Khoa long lost boss :) I just logged on to this site not long ago (actually i had an account several months back, but only read it intensively in the past week) but thought its fantastic... Planning to apply this year, but just read around here that its prob too late for personal coaching?! Cheers!

The meeting nicely took place at Highland Coffee at Parkson building.
We had about 10 person, 7 are alumni and the rest three came there as guests.

Participant profiles:
- Most of almuni have a BA or BS (legal, economics, engineering, computer science…) from Berkeley.
- Three of them are Taiwaneses (two beautiful girls ;) ), one is Phililpinos, two Vietnameses grew up in the US since they were still not appeared on earth.
- Three are RMIT VN lecturers.
- Three of them got a MBA and only one MBA from Berkeley, the others graduated from UCLA, UC Davis. Another extra info: three MBAs are on high positions: General Director or Vice Director of their family businesses or realestate companies. Their companies seem not small. This is probably one of the most crucial reasons for u to get a MBA :P
- Three guests: one from Univ of Technology – me, one girl (HT Thuy) from FTU (perhaps she is htran’s friend) and a boy from Hufflit.

I even had a feeling that the conversation likely happened in Berkeley campus 

Now I have to speak to the thing you’re waiting for or you guy claim that I still beast around the bush :D

The Berkeley MBA is Vincent Lu from Taiwan. He is currently working on two projects in Dong Nai, one is golf yard and the other is a building. He gave us some key factors to successfully apply to Berkeley Haas:
- Career path: should be clear and consistency. Why would a MBA be needed for your career?
- Selling point: try to show the strongest point to make you outstanding from others.
- Why choose Haas?
o For example: Haas is highly ranked on marketing, entrepreurship… but not on finance, so if we want to apply on Haas MBA finance we will have a big chance of …saying goodbye to Haas.
o Due to the location and history of Haas, Haas and Stanford are the two most prominent schools have the best support and relationships with firms from Sillicon Valley. From my elbow room, I think this question is best prepared by asking alumni.
- About FA and scholarships…: Lu paid by himself so he didnt have the answer.

Others:
- Berkeley class size is small so students conveniently get familiar with others.
- There are so many clubs and activities voluntarily held by students and these students are eagerly to support newbies.
- Some of Vincent Lu friends are Haas’s interviewers in Vietnam. Sometimes the number of applicants one person has to talk with up to 7.

And many of different useful tips are still available …Im trying to keep secret… if you want to know more please invite me for a coffee break and I will tell you later … just kidding :o They might have more but the above are what I could retrieve
as far as what my ears can hear, what my mind can understand :)

Thanks sleepingfool for sharing. Some more information for those who are interested in Haas:
- Haas đề cao innovation. Nên khi phỏng vấn họ sẽ hỏi nhiều về những tình huống mà candidate chứng tỏ mình có innovative.
- Nên apply Haas vào round 1 hoặc 2 thì cơ hội được full scholarship sẽ cao hơn. Round 3 chỉ còn lại rất ít tiền học bổng thôi.
- Chị alumni của Haas phỏng vấn KA rất dễ thương, chị ấy nói luôn là Haas ở mỗi nước sẽ có 1 vài alumni làm cộng tác viên, năm nào cũng phỏng vấn các candidates. Họ sẽ phỏng vấn theo 1 list questionaires có sẵn (khoảng 25 câu), nên nhiều khi câu hỏi sẽ bị lặp lại với những gì mình đã nói rồi nhưng họ vẫn muốn mình trả lời lại để họ ghi lại. KA không nhớ hết các câu hỏi, nhưng về nội dung thì cũng giống như bạn sleepingfool nói thôi, các câu hỏi không quá lắt léo đâu.
- Không biết những người khác phỏng vấn thế nào, nhưng chị alumni phỏng vấn KA ở BKK rất thân thiện, chỉ cách cho KA viết thư cho Dean của Haas thế nào để xin thêm học bổng nữa (đáng tiếc là muộn quá nên trường không còn budget), rồi giới thiệu cho KA nên làm internship ở đâu nữa.

I'm not sure about Thang's plan, but you can go to Haas for Finance if you want.
